Set in 1805 in the thirteen year old Michael must decide wether to stay in Charleston as a slave or risk everything and flee North for his freedom. Very interesting historical fiction with a sympathetic main character.

This book written as fiction tells the true story of Suzanne David Hall, a young girl who spied for the French Resistance during WWII. suzanne is thirteen years old when the Nazis take over her town and drive her and her family out of their house. suzanne and her family cope the best they can. She continues her sining lessons and begins to sing in operas. The local doctor takes note that she moves around the city and asks her to become spy number 22. This is a good historical fiction read for older students. There is one graphic scene at the beginning of the book when Madame Montagne is killed by a bomb.

Journey Outside

Disatisfied with their present life in the underground world, young Dilar, one of the Raft People, escapes above ground and discovers new cultures and unfamiliar worlds. It is interesting reading as he describes what he finds and one can guess what it could be. I recommend this book.

Esperanza Rising

Wealthy and privileged, Esperanza and her mother must leave their beautiful home in Mexico after her father is murdered. They flee to California to work and live on a Mexican farm labor camp during the Great Depression. The challenges of the hard work and the economic difficutlies make very interesting reading. I recommend this book.
